Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital, conveniently located in the San Ramon Valley, is a state-of-the-art, full service veterinary hospital. Founded in January 2008, BCAH provides exceptional, personalized medicine and surgery for your pet.

Our Professional Staff

Sandy Block, DVM

Dr. Sandy Block, our founder, has been serving the pets of the Tri-Valley area since 1990. She grew up in, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, New Jersey, a 4-year stay in Belgium before finally settling in Missouri. Fortunate to be mentored by her Aunt Gale and Uncle Bob (both veterinarians), her love for animals and veterinary medicine started when she was nine years old. She was a 4-H and FFA member and has always been an avid horsewoman. She earned her B.S. in Animal Science in 1984 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1988 from the University of Missouri.

Her veterinary interests are: internal medicine, pain management, dentistry, animal behavior and encouraging pet parentss to adopt ongoing preventative care and wellness plans for their pets.

Dr. Block serves as the veterinarian for the San Ramon Police Department K-9 unit; Bongo, Hector and Senna as well as Danville K-9 Ronnie.  She is the veterinarian for Dogs for Diabetics (an organization in Concord that trains medical alert service dogs for diabetics), works with CCI (Canine Companions for Independence) and Guide Dogs for the Blind. Dr. Block is a member of the Hall of Fame Board of Directors for Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF).

Sandy is thrilled to be serving the community she lives in with her husband, David, and sons, Austin and Peyton. She currently has one animal Harley, a career-changed D4D black lab. In her spare time Dr. Block is an avid hiker, camper, and horseback rider. She also enjoys cooking, reading, traveling and photography. She is actively involved in the community including being an assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 834.  She belongs to the PTA, is a member at St. Joan of Arc, involved in Christian Family Movement, and supports Raptor’s Lacrosse and Cal High Track & Field.

Ashley Atkin, DVM

Dr. Ashley Atkin joined Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital in 2015 after serving the Pleasanton area for 3 ½ years.

Dr. Atkin was born and raised in San Francisco. She grew up with two Maine Coon cats, Tigger & Meliou. She explored her love of animals and veterinary medicine volunteering at the Marin Humane Society.

She received her B.S. in Animal Science in 2005 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from UC Davis in 2010. In veterinary school she was a vice president of her graduating class and was very involved in many volunteer programs including the Pet Loss Support Hotline, multiple spay & neuter programs, and shelter dog training projects. She went on to complete her internship at PetCare– a 24 hour emergency, specialty, and wellness hospital in Santa Rosa.

Her veterinary interests include internal medicine, surgery, dentistry, patient care, and client education. She enjoys interacting with her clients and making sure her patients feel comfortable. She also believes client communication is an integral part of a successful treatment plan for her patients.

She and her husband share their home in Walnut Creek with their dachshund mix, Harley, and their cat, Bongo. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, wine tasting, skiing, and traveling.

David Block, Hospital Manager

David grew up in the New Orleans area and moved to California with his parents in 1977 when his dad was transferred here with Chevron. He graduated from Clayton Valley High School and attended Cal State Hayward where he graduated with degrees in Public Relations and Business.

David brings a wealth of experience to BCAH. His strong business and organizational skills benefit BCAH – allowing the veterinary side to operate smoothly and efficiently.

He worked in sales for several different industries including the food and beverage industry and hazardous materials abatement industry. He also spent 7 years as a loan officer in the mortgage industry.

Along with his wife, Dr. Sandy Block, he enjoys hiking, camping and sports with their children. He is a “rabid” New Orleans Saints fan and loves Bruce Springsteen. He has coached Little League, is active at St. Joan of Arc parish in San Ramon in the Knights of Columbus and Christian Family Movement and is an assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 834.

Nina Ortins Bankhead – Registered Veterinary Technician

Nina joined the Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital team in March 2010.  She has been a RVT since 2005. Nina attended Western Career College and became a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2007.

She has always had a love for animals and when she heard about the veterinary technician profession she registered for school the next day. Along with great organizational skills, Nina has great animal handling techniques that help the furry patients feel at ease and comfortable. She has a special interest in critical care.

On the weekends Nina and her husband Steven enjoy camping, hiking, playing board games, and trying new restaurants. They also love to travel to places like hawaii and costa rica. They have a cat “Ava” that Nina rescued and someday soon would like to add a dog to her family.

Allie has been an animal lover for as long as she can remember. She has been involved in the veterinary business since she was 18 years old. Allie has one dog who is a black Labrador mix; Cole and 2 cats Adam and Emma. She and her boyfriend Mike have lived in Concord since 2012. Allie loves being able to work in a field where she gets the opportunity to love on so many animals and make new furry friends!

Melinda_300Melinda Goularte – Registered Veterinary Technician

Melinda has been interning at Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital since September 2011. She is currently in the Veterinary Technology Program at Foothill College studying to becoming a Registered Veterinary Technician and will be graduating in June 2012. She has loved animals all her life and could not imagine herself in any other career. Being a San Ramon native, Melinda really finds it rewarding to help the people of this community to keep their animal companions happy and healthy. She currently shares her home with a very spoiled cat named Leyla and hopes to add more furry friends to her family in the future. Outside of work she enjoys reading, hiking, and camping.

Laurie Elliot – Patient Advocate
Laurie has always been an animal lover and has been involved in the veterinary industry off and on since she was in high school.  Laurie started working for Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital in September 2014 as a patient advocate and loves seeing all of the many 4 legged kids that come through the door.   She has had many pets throughout her life and just adopted her newest dog, Priscilla, from ARF.  Laurie has 2 grown sons who no longer live in California at this time so she tries to see them whenever she can.

Outside of work Laurie enjoys going to baseball and football games and is the most avid Minnesota Vikings fan you’ll ever meet.  She is also the commissioner of her fantasy football league and lives for football during the season.  She also enjoys going to concerts, hiking, taking kickboxing classes, running and working out.


Chantelle Amerson – Patient Advocate

Chantelle has worked as a receptionist in the veterinary field since 2011 in general practice as well as veterinary internal medicine and animal eye care. She joined the BCAH staff in May of 2016. Chantelle has owned and cared for several animals throughout her life from lizards to horses. She currently has two rescue dogs, Pandora and Chaos and a feral cat rescue named QuiQui La Rue. When not working, Chantelle enjoys running, hiking and traveling.
